Greek defense ministry receives 117 million euros in donations

Greece's Ministry of National Defence has received substantial donations, totaling nearly 117 million euros from July 2023 to August 2026. The ministry acknowledged and thanked donors for their crucial support in reforming the armed forces and enhancing infrastructure.

The Greek national narrative has historically been based on the institution of sponsorship.

In the current year alone, 138 donors contributed to this effort. The donations are broken down by year: 298,075 euros in 2023 (from July), 23,191,177 euros in 2024, 38,048,235 euros in 2025, and 55,283,744 euros in 2026 (up to August 21).

Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias emphasized the deep historical roots of donations in Greece. "The Greek national narrative has historically been based on the institution of sponsorship," he stated. Dendias drew parallels to ancient Athenian democracy, noting that "Athenian democracy, without sponsorship and without the trierarchy, would not have existed." He added that this tradition of national beneficence, where successful individuals choose to support the homeland in critical times, continues through the centuries.

The Ministry's Donation Acceptance Department serves as the primary point of contact for donation requests to the Armed Forces, aiming to fulfill donors' wishes and ensure the effective utilization of contributions.
