Greek Firefighters Battle 25 Fires in 24 Hours; Aspropyrgos Blaze Partially Contained

Greek fire services responded to a significant number of incidents over a 24-hour period, battling 25 rural and forest fires across the country. Of these, 22 were quickly contained in their initial stages, preventing widespread damage.

However, three fires required ongoing efforts. One blaze, which erupted around 8:30 PM in low vegetation in Aspropyrgos, Attica, was brought under partial control within 20 minutes. Firefighting forces managed to contain and delimit the fire, despite its location near residential areas and infrastructure.

To combat the Aspropyrgos fire, 22 firefighters with 8 vehicles and a helicopter were deployed. Municipal water tankers from Aspropyrgos also assisted in the firefighting efforts. The fire department has activated an investigative unit to determine the causes of the blaze, while a drone provided continuous thermal and visual monitoring.

The Aspropyrgos area is currently classified as being at high risk for fires, category 3. This highlights the ongoing challenge of managing wildfires in the region, particularly during periods of elevated risk.
