Greek island offers job caring for cats in exchange for accommodation

For animal lovers and travel enthusiasts, a unique opportunity awaits on the Greek island of Syros. The non-profit Syros Cats is offering free accommodation and meals to volunteers willing to help care for the island's stray cat population.

The organization, a pioneer in animal protection in the Cyclades archipelago, is preparing for its 2027 season. Applications will open in September 2026, welcoming individuals from around the globe. This initiative addresses the challenge of stray cat overpopulation common in Mediterranean regions, where thousands of felines rely on the kindness of locals and tourists.

Syros Cats plays a crucial role in managing these colonies. Their programs include sterilization, vaccination, medical treatment, and responsible adoption, aiming to prevent malnutrition and disease. The organization's base is located near Ermoupoli, the administrative capital of the Cyclades, known for its neoclassical architecture and maritime history.

Volunteers commit to five hours of work daily, six days a week. In return, they receive free lodging in a shared house with other international collaborators, with each volunteer getting a private room. The package also includes daily breakfast and access to utilities like water, electricity, and internet. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, fluent in English for multicultural team interaction, and physically fit for manual labor. A minimum commitment of one month is required.
