Greek police probe 'foul play' in death of woman found in suitcase

Greek police are investigating the death of a 38-year-old Scottish woman, Elisabeth-Jane Ross, whose body was found in a suitcase in an abandoned building in Athens's Kypseli district on July 18. A homeless man reportedly discovered the remains. Authorities believe Ross died between five and seven days before she was found and had traveled to Greece from Cyprus approximately two weeks prior.

"We are awaiting the results of the toxicology tests to determine the cause of death and ascertain whether foul play was involved, as this was not clarified by the initial examination of the body," a police spokesperson told the BBC. The Scottish government has pledged support to Ross's family through the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Helena Smith, The Guardian's correspondent in Athens, described the area where the body was found as a derelict building in a neighborhood now popular with tourists and expatriates. Ross, who had family in Edinburgh and connections to Greece, was staying with a friend in Athens before her disappearance. There are indications that someone may have controlled her mobile phone after her death, sending messages to mislead authorities and friends attempting to locate her.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed they are providing consular support and are in contact with Greek authorities. Police Scotland is also liaising with Greek authorities and supporting the family in Scotland.
