Greek Supermarkets to Cut Prices by Up to 20% on Essential Goods

Greek consumers can anticipate significant price drops on essential supermarket items, with reductions ranging from 5% to 20% set to begin on August 31, 2026. This national initiative aims to ease the burden on households by lowering the cost of everyday goods.

The process involves businesses submitting binding proposals for price reductions by July 27. These proposals will be evaluated, and participating supermarket chains will be notified of the selected product codes by July 29. The final submissions are due by August 3. The initiative, spearheaded by the Independent Market Control and Consumer Protection Authority (AAEA&PK), will run until December 31, 2026.

Key product categories targeted include fresh meat, dairy products, eggs, pasta, legumes, flour, oils, baby milk and diapers, breakfast items, soft drinks, detergents, personal hygiene products, and school supplies. The reductions will apply to regular shelf prices, not temporary offers, with August 27 prices serving as the reference point. Any subsequent promotions will be calculated based on these new, lower prices.

To ensure transparency and consumer awareness, participating products will be clearly marked on shelves and featured on the PosoKanei platform. The AAEA&PK has also implemented 16 competition protection measures to prevent information exchange among businesses regarding pricing strategies. The success of the initiative hinges on delivering tangible benefits to Greek households through substantial and sustainable price decreases.
