Greenland Postpones Oil Drilling by Trump-Linked U.S. Company

Greenland's authorities have delayed the planned oil exploration drilling by Greenland Energy, an American company associated with Donald Trump's administration. The postponement comes despite recent assurances from a U.S. envoy suggesting that oil extraction could commence as early as next year.

The company intended to begin drilling in the Jameson Land region on Greenland's east coast. However, officials announced that the necessary regulatory procedures cannot be finalized in time for the planned start. Greenlandic officials highlighted that the company's tight schedule does not allow for an adequate assessment of the environmental and local community impacts. The drilling site is a protected wetland inhabited by rare bird species and musk oxen, animals crucial to local hunter communities.

This decision represents a setback for the company's plans and for projections made by Jeff Landry, the governor of Louisiana and Trump's designated envoy for Greenland. Landry had previously expressed optimism that Greenland's oil resources could help alleviate the energy crisis and suggested production could begin within ten months. Greenland Energy's CEO, Robert Price, estimates that the Jameson Land region holds approximately one trillion dollars worth of oil. He stated the company remains committed to its exploration program, promising responsible operations in line with Greenlandic laws and authorities.

Greenland Energy, established last year, plans to invest around $60 million from investors for drilling operations in exchange for a majority stake. The company and its partners have maintained that the project is separate from any U.S. annexation ambitions for Greenland. However, Greenland Energy has connections to individuals close to the Trump administration. The company will use the postponement period to revise its plans and strengthen relationships with local communities, strategic partners, and authorities.
