Greenland reiterates 'not for sale' stance to US envoy

Greenland's leadership has firmly reiterated its stance against any potential sale of the territory to the United States, following a meeting with a US envoy. Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen described his talks with US Special Envoy Jeff Landry as 'constructive,' emphasizing a spirit of dialogue and mutual respect. However, Nielsen was unequivocal in stating that Greenland's sovereignty and the right to self-determination of its people are non-negotiable.

This meeting comes at a time when tensions surrounding former US President Donald Trump's repeated assertions of interest in acquiring Greenland have somewhat subsided but not entirely disappeared. Both Nielsen and Greenland's Foreign Minister Múte Egede stressed that the US has not abandoned its objective to acquire the territory. Greenland's position remains clear: the island is not a bargaining chip, and its people will not be 'sold.'

We clearly reiterated that the people of Greenland are not for sale and that Greenlanders have the right to self-determination. This is not a subject for negotiation.

While the US envoy's visit aimed to foster dialogue, Greenlandic officials maintain their 'red line.' The US position, as reiterated by Landry, appears unchanged despite previous Danish and international opposition to Trump's proposals, which at one point included the possibility of military force. Greenland's government, in coordination with Denmark, has been seeking to manage these diplomatic overtures, ensuring their national interests and autonomy are paramount.
