Greens demand Merz change course on climate policy

Green Party faction leader Katharina Dröge is demanding a fundamental shift in the federal government's climate policy, urging Chancellor Friedrich Merz to abandon "anti-climate plans" and implement an "emergency climate plan." Dröge stated that the current actions by the CDU and SPD are accelerating the climate crisis and called for an immediate, fundamental course correction.

To achieve this, Dröge proposes withdrawing or fundamentally revising several legislative packages, including the Building Modernization Act, the Grid Package, the amendment to the Renewable Energy Sources Act, and the Energy Efficiency Act. She also advocates for a faster expansion of renewable energy, the phasing out of environmentally harmful subsidies, and the introduction of a speed limit on highways, emphasizing these measures would provide effective and immediate climate protection.

Friedrich Merz must first stop the anti-climate plans of his coalition. The CDU and SPD are currently acting as accelerators of the climate crisis. The government needs a fundamental change of course immediately.

Furthermore, Dröge stressed the need for better protection of citizens against the consequences of the climate crisis, calling for a nationwide heat protection plan. She also suggested enshrining nature conservation and climate adaptation as a shared task in the Basic Law to empower municipalities. Dröge noted that while Merz has acknowledged the climate crisis, his words must be followed by actions, referencing his visit to the Eifel region after a forest fire.
