GS Engineering and LG Uplus join forces to develop a modular AI data center model

GS Engineering & Construction is joining LG Uplus and three other companies to develop a standard model for prefabricated modular data centers, targeting the surge in demand for AI infrastructure.

The companies recently signed an agreement to establish a prefabricated modular data center alliance. The partners are GS Engineering & Construction, LG Uplus, GS C&A, Gansam Architecture and D&O CM.

The planned model will modularize the building structure and major facilities, including power and cooling systems. Those components will be produced in advance and then assembled and installed at the construction site. GS Engineering & Construction said the method could shorten construction schedules, standardize quality and reduce risks at the site compared with conventional data center construction.

In the AI data center market, how stably and quickly a data center can be built when customers need it is becoming an important competitive advantage.

The approach is also designed to improve time to market, allowing infrastructure to be supplied when customers need it. The participating companies will jointly develop and commercialize a standard model that can be used for large-scale AI data centers.

GS Engineering & Construction will review the model's structural design, construction methods, ways to reduce building time and the appropriateness of construction costs, drawing on its experience with large data centers. LG Uplus will provide technical requirements and business direction based on its experience operating data centers and its understanding of customer needs. A company official said the partnership would combine the firm's large-scale data center engineering, procurement and construction experience with modular technology suited to conditions in South Korea.
