Guardia Civil to deploy over 24,000 agents for solar eclipse security operation

Spain is preparing for a significant influx of visitors on August 12 as it becomes a prime location for observing a total solar eclipse. To manage the event and ensure public safety, the Guardia Civil is launching a large-scale security operation involving more than 24,000 agents.

The extensive deployment will cover land, sea, and air, with a focus on enhancing citizen security, traffic management, and environmental protection. The operation will secure over 660 designated eclipse observation points, representing 84% of those identified nationwide. The Guardia Civil plans to increase its visible presence on major communication routes, access roads to observation sites, and in natural areas expected to draw large crowds.

Key objectives include channeling and organizing traffic flow, facilitating mobility, preventing infractions and crimes, and ensuring a rapid response to any emergencies. The operation will utilize various specialized units, including traffic, environmental protection (SEPRONA), maritime, air services, mountain rescue, underwater operations, and drone teams. A command post will provide continuous monitoring of the operation's progress.

Authorities are emphasizing public awareness and safety, urging citizens to plan their trips in advance, check official websites for preferred observation spots and restricted zones, avoid unnecessary travel, and strictly adhere to the guidance provided by law enforcement and emergency personnel. The goal is to allow everyone to enjoy this exceptional astronomical phenomenon safely while minimizing risks associated with large gatherings in natural settings.
