Guatemala's 'La Llorona' Legend Inspires New Stage Play

Guatemala's most famous oral tradition, the legend of "La Llorona" (The Weeping Woman), is coming to life on stage at the Festival de Junio 2026. The play, titled "La Llorona de Guatemala," offers a tragicomic exploration of this iconic folklore figure through the story of Juana.

Staged at the Teatro de Cámara Hugo Carrillo within the Centro Cultural Miguel Ángel Asturias, the production delves into a narrative filled with secrets, violence, and superstitions. Juana finds herself besieged by apparitions of La Llorona, as her family appears to be marked by a curse linked to the legendary specter. The play examines how this ancient myth continues to echo in modern society, touching upon family conflicts, collective memory, and persistent social issues.

As the plot progresses, family secrets surface, leading characters and the audience to question the nature of La Llorona. Is she merely a cursed spirit, or does she embody the collective sorrow of humanity? Director and actor Dáriel Pérez aims to present the figure from multiple perspectives, weaving together elements of humor, drama, and mystery while preserving the essence of the legend that has made La Llorona a cornerstone of Guatemalan oral tradition.
