Although pure gold does not rust easily, jewelry often contains other metals that can be affected by humidity. Jewelry should therefore stay in a dry, well-ventilated place away from water, including bathrooms. Clean, suitable containers with soft lining can help prevent scratches and friction.

Chains, bracelets, rings and earrings should be stored separately. This helps prevent chains from tangling and jewelry from rubbing against one another. Owners should also keep receipts, purity certificates, weight records and other purchase documents in a secure place. Digital copies can be protected with a password.
