Guinea landfill collapse toll rises to 34, dozens injured

The death toll from a weekend garbage dump collapse in Guinea's capital has climbed to 34, with authorities reporting 33 people injured, six critically. The disaster struck early Sunday in the Dar es Salam neighborhood of Conakry when a massive pile of trash gave way after heavy rains, crushing several nearby homes.

Local residents told AFP that multiple family members perished in the collapse. Guinea's Health Minister Kaite Sall confirmed the updated toll, stating that several Sierra Leonean nationals were among the victims. "We have contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which in turn contacted the Sierra Leonean embassy for the identification of their nationals and the recovery of bodies," Sall informed journalists.

The Guinean government announced plans for a collective burial for all victims. Approximately 1,500 families are expected to be relocated following the disaster. Authorities had recently initiated eviction operations and security enhancements around the landfill due to the risk of further collapses. The region is currently experiencing a particularly long and intense rainy season.
