Colombia investigates possible arson behind widespread forest fires

Colombian authorities are investigating whether deliberate criminal acts are fueling the extensive forest fires that have ravaged thousands of hectares across the nation. The prosecutor's office is examining "intentional actions that caused the emergencies" under the "crime of arson," a source within the institution told AFP.

The Tolima department, the hardest-hit region, has seen nine active fires consuming at least 20,000 hectares of forests and valuable crops like lemon, coffee, and mango. In response to "serious indications" that the fires were intentionally set, the governor of Tolima announced the militarization of affected municipalities.

These fires occur amidst a severe drought and the El Niño phenomenon, which has reduced rainfall and increased temperatures in Colombia. President Abelardo de la Espriella has pointed to reports of "men on motorcycles" allegedly starting the flames, vowing rigorous investigation and prosecution. The government has requested international aid from Chile and the United States to help extinguish the fires and announced support for affected farmers and ranchers, many of whom have lost livestock.
