Gunfire in Marconi neighborhood: ShotSpotter detects over 500 shots, armed man arrested

The neighborhood of Marconi in Uruguay experienced an unprecedented surge in violence Wednesday night, as the ShotSpotter system detected over 500 gunshots within a single evening. This marks the first time such a high volume of gunfire has been recorded in one night, according to sources from the Ministry of Interior. The initial barrage of 96 shots was registered around 9:00 PM in the Adolfo Artagaveytia street area. Later, around 1:30 AM, an additional 432 shots were detected near Aparicio Saravia and Rambla Costanera.

Following the extensive gunfire, officers from the Republican Guard's Intervention Unit were dispatched to the intersection of Artagaveytia and Pasaje H. Upon arrival, police encountered a group of six armed individuals who opened fire on the officers. The Republican Guard responded, repelling the aggression and apprehending one of the men. The arrested individual, who has a prior criminal record, was found in possession of a modified Glock pistol equipped with an extended magazine.

This incident occurs shortly after another violent event in the same neighborhood. Last Sunday, police were alerted to a homicide in Marconi where a man was shot multiple times. Upon arriving at the scene, investigators interviewed a witness who heard the shots and saw the assailants fleeing. The victim was transported to a hospital with gunshot wounds to the abdomen and chest and later died on May 31. The Homicide department is investigating that case.

The repeated outbreaks of violence in Marconi underscore a persistent security challenge in the area. The extensive use of firearms, as evidenced by the ShotSpotter data, points to a serious level of criminal activity. Authorities are working to address the situation, with the recent arrest providing a small step towards accountability, though the underlying issues of violence and armed conflict within the neighborhood remain a significant concern.
