Gunmen kill eight, injure 10 in fresh Plateau attack

Gunmen have killed at least eight people and injured 10 others in a brutal attack on Gwon-Ajang village, located in the Foron District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area in Nigeria's Plateau State. The assault occurred around 10 p.m. on Sunday when the assailants targeted villagers who had gathered for a birthday celebration.

Witnesses described a scene of terror as the attackers indiscriminately opened fire, prompting residents to flee for their safety amid widespread panic. Rwang Tengwong, the National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), confirmed the incident on Monday, stating that the injured are receiving medical treatment.

Bishop Iliya, a local resident, lamented the recurring violence plaguing Plateau communities, emphasizing the need for enhanced security measures. "The people were gathered for a birthday celebration when the gunmen arrived and started shooting at everything in sight. It is a painful and unfortunate situation for our community," he said.

The BYM has expressed deep concern over the renewed violence and urged security agencies to take decisive action to apprehend the perpetrators. This latest attack follows a pattern of escalating violence in the region, including the killing of two young men in an ambush on May 11 and a midnight attack on May 9 that claimed at least 12 lives, including pregnant women and children.

Amnesty International has previously condemned the killings in Plateau, citing them as evidence of the Nigerian government's failure to address the persistent insecurity. The rights organization called for justice for victims and survivors, highlighting that entire families were reportedly attacked in their homes during previous assaults.
