Gunmen kill two, injure one, burn houses in Plateau attacks

Two people were killed and another injured in renewed attacks on Berom communities in Nigeria's Plateau State, according to the Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM). The violence erupted Tuesday night, affecting at least four locations including Gwa-Wereng Rim, Kyeng Village, Dorong, and Jol Village.

In Gwa-Wereng Rim, gunmen allegedly invaded the community around 9:30 p.m., opening fire on residents. The BYM reported that Bulus Mwagwong, known as Dikko, was killed, while his cousin Yakubu sustained serious injuries. Separately, 47-year-old Stephen Dachollom Kaze was killed in Kyeng Village around 8:30 p.m.

Further violence was reported in Dorong, where attackers are accused of setting houses ablaze, causing property destruction and forcing residents to flee. At Jol Village, armed assailants reportedly engaged in a gun battle with local vigilantes, escalating tensions in the area.

The BYM condemned the attacks, labeling them a "disturbing threat" to the safety and livelihoods of rural communities. The association expressed concern over the increasing frequency of assaults, particularly targeting farmers. They urged security agencies to enhance their presence, intensify surveillance, and apprehend those responsible. The BYM also called for immediate assistance for affected families and communities, including those who lost loved ones and property, and appealed for the perpetrators to be arrested and prosecuted.

The association said 47-year-old Stephen Dachollom Kaze was also killed by suspected attackers at Kyeng Village, Bachi District, at about 8:30 p.m.
