Gunmen Kill Two, Burn Homes in Plateau State Attacks

Two people were killed and houses were set ablaze in fresh attacks targeting Berom communities in Nigeria's Plateau State. The violence occurred on Tuesday night and affected at least four locations, including Gwa-Wereng Rim, Kyeng Village, Dorong, and Jol Village.

47-year-old Stephen Dachollom Kaze was also killed by suspected attackers at Kyeng Village, Bachi District, at about 8:30 p.m.

The Berom Youth Moulders-Association confirmed the killings, identifying one victim as Bulus Mwagwong, known as Dikko, who was killed in Gwa-Wereng Rim. His cousin, Yakubu, sustained fatal injuries. Another victim, Stephen Dachollom Kaze, was killed in Kyeng Village. Residents described the Gwa-Wereng Rim attack as an invasion where gunmen opened fire on people.

In Dorong, attackers allegedly set houses ablaze, causing destruction and forcing residents to flee. At Jol Village, armed attackers reportedly engaged local vigilantes in a gun battle, escalating tensions. The BYM National President, Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, condemned the attacks, calling them a significant threat to the safety and livelihoods of rural communities.

The attack at Gwa-Wereng Rim occurred at about 9:30 p.m., when gunmen reportedly invaded the community and opened fire on residents.

The association expressed concern over the increasing frequency of attacks on farming communities and called for immediate action from security agencies. They urged for strengthened presence, intensified surveillance, and the pursuit of those responsible. The BYM also appealed to the Plateau State Government for assistance to affected families and communities, extending condolences and wishing the injured a swift recovery.
