Gus Yusuf and the Vision of Transformative Service for NU's Second Century

KH Muhammad Yusuf Chudlori, widely known as Gus Yusuf, is emerging as a progressive and integrity-driven figure within Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), Indonesia's largest Islamic organization. His extensive 28-year political career, decades as a pesantren (Islamic boarding school) leader, and deep involvement in education, health, economy, and community empowerment shape his vision for NU's future.

Despite numerous offers for political positions, including parliamentary seats, ministerial roles, and governorships, Gus Yusuf consistently chose service over power. This commitment aligns with the late Gus Dur's message to continuously strive for the welfare and benefit of NU members. His diverse experiences are seen as crucial assets for leading PBNU (Central Board of NU) into its second century, aiming for a more progressive approach while preserving unity and strong familial ties.

Gus Yusuf's practical contributions are evident in Central Java, where he has supported the construction of NU offices at various levels and facilitated health facilities and community empowerment programs through LAZISNU and a Sharia Rural Credit Bank. At the pesantren level, he has championed the transformation from traditional to modern and super-modern models, exemplified by the Subbanul Wathon Integrated International School (SWIIS) in Magelang and the Subbanul Wathon Hospital.

Economic strengthening is another key focus, with initiatives like developing the BPRS and collaborative ventures aimed at fostering community independence. PCNU Magelang, for instance, has grown to own nearly 20 buses through gradual business development. Gus Yusuf also emphasizes adapting NU's da'wah (preaching) methods for the digital age, reaching millennials and Gen Z through social media and online platforms, while continuing interfaith dialogue and support for vulnerable groups. He advocates for equipping pesantren graduates with practical skills, such as waste management, to enhance their post-graduation prospects.
