Haaland gives Manchester City narrow win over Coventry

Erling Haaland’s header secured Manchester City a 1-0 win over Coventry City at the Etihad Stadium, keeping City’s perfect Premier League start intact.

Coventry created the first opening after eight minutes, when Taiwo Awoniyi’s effort from inside the penalty area narrowly missed the left post. Haaland tested goalkeeper Carl Rushworth eight minutes later, but Rushworth saved his shot toward the bottom-right corner.

City continued to press. Rayan Cherki struck the right post with a powerful close-range effort before the breakthrough arrived in the 26th minute. Antoine Semenyo sent an accurate cross into the box, and Haaland met it with a header that Rushworth could not keep out.

Haaland nearly added another before halftime, but Rushworth produced an outstanding save. City thought it had scored again in the 58th minute, when Haaland found the net, but the goal was ruled offside.

Coventry pushed for an equalizer late in the match. Loum Tchaouna’s low shot was stopped by Gianluigi Donnarumma after a move involving Awoniyi and Caleb Yirenkyi. Ellis Simms also had a close-range chance saved, while Bobby Thomas headed wide in the 82nd minute. City moved to nine points from three matches, while Coventry remained bottom after three defeats.
