Haaland scores late winner as Norway advances to World Cup Round of 16

Norway secured a spot in the World Cup Round of 16 for the first time since 1998, thanks to a late goal from star striker Erling Haaland and a spectacular opening goal from Antonio Nusa. The Scandinavian team defeated Ivory Coast, a previous opponent of Germany in the group stage, 2-1 in Dallas on Tuesday.

The match saw Norway's key players, including Haaland and Nusa, return to form. Despite a largely lackluster performance from both sides, characterized by numerous errors, Norway's efficiency ultimately prevailed. Coach Stale Solbakken had insisted prior to the match that his team did not rely solely on long balls to Haaland, aiming instead for possession-based play.

While Norway controlled the ball in the first half, they struggled to create clear chances for Haaland, who was effectively marked by the Ivorian defense. However, just before halftime, the skillful Nusa broke through, scoring a brilliant goal with a curling shot from the edge of the area in the 39th minute.

Ivory Coast, who showed more attacking intent and relied on the physical presence of Franck Kessié and the dynamism of Yan Diomandé on the left wing, failed to convert their opportunities. Despite numerous attacks and several corner kicks, they struggled to threaten the Norwegian goal. However, after Amad Diallo came on as a substitute, he managed to score an equalizer in the 75th minute with a skillful run and shot, pushing the game towards extra time.

But in the final minutes, Haaland proved decisive. He scored his fifth goal of the tournament, securing the victory for Norway and setting up a Round of 16 clash with Brazil at Metlife Stadium.
