The latest accident on May 17th saw a railbike rear-end a towing vehicle, leading to severe injuries for four passengers, one of whom, a woman in her 70s, later died. This incident follows an earlier collision on May 2nd, where a sudden stop by a railbike to retrieve a dropped hat caused a chain reaction, involving six other railbikes and a scenic train, injuring 16 people. In response to these devastating events, Hadong County has ordered a complete suspension of the railbike's operations and issued a corrective order to the operating company, the Happiness Community Corporation. Police are actively investigating the precise causes, examining factors such as brake system malfunctions and operator error. A joint forensic examination with the National Forensic Service is scheduled, and the possibility of applying the Serious Accidents Punishment Act is under consideration, indicating a serious approach to accountability. The Hadong Railbike, which utilizes a decommissioned railway line, has been a significant tourist draw since its opening in 2017.
