Hamburg building ban widens as cracks worsen

Authorities in Hamburg-Altona have extended a building ban to another neighboring property due to escalating structural concerns. The building at Holstenstraße 191/193 is now prohibited from use, following similar measures for two other residences near an old building deemed at risk of collapse.

The decision came after a structural engineer examined the endangered building at 195/197, where significant defects were identified two weeks prior. The engineer found that cracks in the structure had worsened, posing a risk to the stability of the adjacent building at 199. This led to the immediate usage ban for 191/193.

The owner of the primary endangered building has informed the district office of their intention to reinforce the structure. Work is expected to commence in the coming days. Meanwhile, residents displaced from the affected buildings are responsible for finding new housing. Some have applied for emergency housing assistance from the district, though no one has yet required public accommodation.
