Hanil Cement deploys automated system to warn workers of heat danger

Hanil Cement has launched an automated heat illness warning system at its Yeongwol plant, designed to automatically alert workers to take breaks or cease operations based on perceived temperature.

The system analyzes real-time data from on-site thermometers and hygrometers to calculate the perceived temperature. If this figure rises above a set level, the system activates electronic billboards and speakers to issue automatic warnings. Previously, safety personnel manually measured the perceived temperature.

The introduction of the automated warning system has enhanced the effectiveness and immediacy of on-site safety management during the hot season.

When the perceived temperature reaches 33 degrees Celsius (91.4 F), the system issues a heatwave advisory and recommends breaks. If it climbs to 35 degrees Celsius (95 F) or higher, it triggers a warning broadcast and message for outdoor work to stop. The Yeongwol plant is equipped with one billboard and four speakers, strategically placed to cover main worker pathways and work areas. Additional safety broadcasts are conducted daily at 8:30 AM and 1:30 PM.

Beyond the automated system, Hanil Cement has also provided cooling fans and large ventilators in work areas. Employees are given cooling scarves and pads. Rest areas equipped with air conditioning include ice makers and glucose tablets. The company intends to utilize the system for winter cold advisories as well. A company representative stated that the automated system has improved the effectiveness and immediacy of heat safety management during the summer, and they will continue to pursue on-site safety measures.
