Hanoi orders inquiry after VND40,000 school meal contains little more than bean sprouts and minced meat

Hanoi authorities have ordered an urgent investigation into a VND40,000 boarding-school meal at Trung Gia B Primary School after parents posted a photo online showing a sparse serving.

The photo appeared to show a little stir-fried bean sprouts, minced meat, and one small meat skewer. Parents said the meal was served to first-grade pupils on their first day of school and raised concerns about whether it provided adequate nutrition or matched the stated price.

Parents paid VND12,000 for each meal, while the Hanoi People’s Committee provided a VND28,000 subsidy. The online image attracted widespread attention, with many comments saying the meal appeared to have a value and nutritional content below the VND40,000 total.

On the evening of Sept. 8, the Hanoi People’s Committee Office sent a document to Trung Gia Commune. Vice Chairwoman Vu Thu Ha instructed the commune to verify the media reports, clarify the situation, and strictly handle any violations if they are found. The commune must submit its results by 3 p.m. on Sept. 9.

Parents said they had raised their concerns with class teachers and asked that the matter be reported to the school’s management.
