Hanwha Aerospace Launches Global LNG Business, Integrating Energy and Defense Sectors

Hanwha Aerospace, South Korea's largest defense contractor, is venturing into the global liquefied natural gas (LNG) trading business with the establishment of its U.S. subsidiary, Hanwha Horizon USA. This strategic expansion into energy distribution, a field rarely pursued by foreign defense firms, leverages the combined strengths of the Hanwha Group's affiliates.

The new U.S. entity will serve as the control tower for Hanwha Aerospace's LNG operations, encompassing procurement, trading, and logistics optimization. James Sagar, CEO of Hanwha Shipping and a former ExxonMobil executive with expertise in marine and energy sectors, will lead Hanwha Horizon USA. This move follows Hanwha Aerospace's February announcement of an LNG purchase agreement with U.S. firm Venture Global, securing 1.5 million tons of LNG annually for 20 years starting in 2030, with plans to supply European and Asian markets.

The integration of defense and LNG trading is framed by Hanwha as the creation of a "global LNG value chain." This synergy involves Hanwha Ocean constructing LNG carriers, Hanwha Shipping managing transportation, and Hanwha Energy utilizing the LNG for power generation, notably at its Yeosu LNG power plant set to begin commercial operation in 2029. Hanwha Aerospace also anticipates developing LNG trading operations in the broader Asian market.

Beyond commercial interests, Hanwha views this diversification as a potential "leverage for defense exports." The company stated that the stable LNG supply chain contributes to South Korea's energy security and strengthens U.S.-South Korea energy cooperation. This integrated approach could foster "comprehensive security partnerships" encompassing both energy and defense with client nations. Hanwha Aerospace recently secured a significant contract to supply six prototype K9 wheeled self-propelled howitzers to the U.S. Army through its subsidiary Hanwha Defense USA.
