Head of BUMN Criticizes Harsh Criminalization of Elderly Man, Issues Strong Warning to PTPN

The head of Indonesia's state-owned enterprises (BUMN) has issued a strong reprimand to the management of PT Perkebunan Nusantara (PTPN) following the widely publicized case of Kakek Mujiran, an elderly man who faced criminal charges.

Dony Oskaria, head of BP BUMN, condemned the prosecution of Mujiran for collecting leftover rubber sap on PTPN land, calling it a disregard for humanity. He emphasized that state-owned companies, built with public funds, must serve the people and not act arrogantly or oppressively, especially towards vulnerable individuals.

Oskaria has instructed PTPN to immediately cease all legal actions and intimidation against Kakek Mujiran. He also apologized on behalf of BP BUMN for the incident, which he acknowledged had damaged the sense of justice. PTPN's local leadership is required to personally meet with Mujiran and his family to offer an institutional apology.

Furthermore, PTPN is directed to provide adequate social assistance to Kakek Mujiran and offer him suitable employment, or provide work to a family member to ensure a stable income. Oskaria stressed that welfare issues should be addressed through guidance and support, not through criminalization. This case will serve as a critical warning for all BUMN directors, prompting a comprehensive review of asset security procedures to prioritize humane and restorative justice approaches.
