Health Minister 'feels failed' after BPJS patient's death amid hospital wait

Indonesia's Health Minister, Budi Gunadi Sadikin, stated he feels like a failure following the death of a patient covered by the national health insurance, BPJS Kesehatan. The patient, Yurizal Tri Chaerawan, reportedly died after waiting eight hours for a hospital bed.

"Especially if they die young. I feel like I, as the Health Minister, have failed, how can our friends die young?" Sadikin said, responding to questions about Yurizal's case. He emphasized that increasing Indonesia's average life expectancy from 72 to 76 years is one of his key duties, making such deaths particularly distressing.

Instead of receiving widespread support, some comments, reportedly from healthcare workers, were perceived as lacking empathy. Yurizal passed away about a week after posting his complaint. The incident has sparked a broader discussion about the quality and accessibility of healthcare for BPJS Kesehatan beneficiaries.
