Heat threat turns UiTM endurance challenge tragic as one student dies and eight are hospitalized

A university endurance competition in Malaysia turned fatal when a 21-year-old participant died and eight other students were hospitalized after suffering heat-related complications.

Fadhlan Fakhry Solana Mohd. Fellimal was pronounced dead at Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Hospital in Temerloh around midday the day after the incident. Maran district police chief Superintendent Wong Kim Wai confirmed that the student was one of two participants treated at the hospital. Seven others received treatment at Jengka Hospital.

Preliminary examinations found that the students had suffered problems linked to the heat, including a lack of oxygen, Wong said. “Further developments will be provided after receiving Fadhlan Fakhry’s post-mortem report,” he said.

Fadhlan represented UiTM Negeri Sembilan in the competition and was a final-year diploma student at the university’s Seremban campus. The Komander Kesatria Endurance Challenge is an annual event designed to test students’ physical strength, tactical skills, agility and teamwork. Participants come from UiTM branches across Malaysia, and this year’s event was scheduled to run from Sept. 2 to 8 at UiTM’s Pahang branch in Jengka.
