Heatwave drives record sales of water and ice cream in Germany

Germany saw unprecedented sales of water and ice cream in late June as a severe heatwave gripped the country, pushing temperatures to 40 degrees Celsius. Supermarkets reported selling more mineral water and frozen treats than at any point since at least 2023.

Data from the Federal Statistical Office revealed that during the week of June 22 to 28, sales of still water increased by 77 percent, while sparkling water sales rose by 63 percent compared to an average summer week between 2023 and 2025. The demand for ice cream was even more dramatic, with sales jumping by 90 percent during the same period.

These figures represent the highest sales volumes recorded since the statistical office began its tracking in early 2023. The extreme heat drove consumers to seek refreshment, leading to a significant surge in purchases of these essential summer goods.

Other beverages also experienced a notable increase in sales during the heatwave. Sales of beer mixed drinks were up by 63 percent, non-alcoholic beer by 38 percent, and lemonade by 34 percent compared to average summer weeks. The data highlights the direct impact of extreme weather events on consumer behavior and retail sales.
