Heatwave Eases in Greece, Strong Winds and Fire Risk Increase

The intense heatwave gripping Greece is set to ease starting Monday, August 24, according to meteorologist Nikos Kenteris. While a slight reprieve is expected in the northern, eastern, and southern parts of the country, the north winds will pick up significantly, reaching up to 7 Beaufort in the Aegean Sea.

By Thursday and Friday, these north winds are forecast to strengthen further, reaching up to 8 Beaufort. This shift in weather patterns will not only bring cooler temperatures but also alter the atmospheric structure, potentially causing brief afternoon showers in northern Greece. The increased wind speeds, however, will elevate the fire danger index to levels 4 and 5, posing a significant risk.

Despite the temporary cooling, Kenteris warns that the respite may be short-lived. A new heatwave is already predicted for the weekend of August 29-30. The highest temperatures recorded during the recent heatwave reached 40 degrees Celsius in Serres and Ano Titorea, 39 degrees in Larissa, and 38 degrees in Lamia, Tanagra, and Nea Filadelfeia.

The forecast indicates a dynamic weather pattern for Greece, with a cycle of heat followed by strong winds and a renewed surge of high temperatures. Residents are advised to stay informed about the changing conditions and fire risks.
