Heatwave Persists in Greece: Temperatures to Reach 40 Degrees Celsius, Beaches Crowded

Greece is grappling with an intense heatwave, prompting thousands of Athenians and tourists to flock to the beaches in search of respite. The country continues to experience exceptionally high temperatures, testing the resilience of its population and infrastructure.

Coastal areas, particularly south of Athens, were crowded from early morning as the mercury soared past the 40-degree Celsius mark in multiple locations across the country. According to data from the National Observatory of Athens/meteo.gr, the highest temperatures recorded included 40.5°C in Elafonisi, Chania, 40.2°C in Sparta, and 40.1°C in Stylida, Fthiotida. Other areas also saw extreme heat, with Skala Messinias reaching 39.8°C, Gynaikokastro Kilkis at 39.7°C, and Loutraki at 39.6°C.

In the Attica region, temperatures neared 40 degrees, with Aspropyrgos beach recording 39.6°C and Patissia reaching 38.9°C. The heatwave is expected to persist into Monday, August 24, with the National Meteorological Service forecasting temperatures to reach up to 42 degrees Celsius nationwide. While sunny conditions with some clouds are expected, inland areas might experience scattered showers or thunderstorms in the afternoon.

Temperatures across the mainland are predicted to range from 18 to 37-39 degrees Celsius, with eastern and southern parts potentially hitting 40-42 degrees. Thessaly could see temperatures between 37-39 degrees, possibly reaching 40 locally. Macedonia and Thrace are expected to experience 38-39 degrees, while the Eastern Aegean islands and Southern Crete could also reach 38-39 degrees. The Ionian Islands are forecast to have temperatures between 35-36 degrees.

In Attica, the forecast indicates sunny skies with some afternoon clouds, and temperatures ranging from 28 to 38 degrees, potentially reaching 40 degrees locally. Winds will blow from the north-northeast at 3-4 Beaufort, strengthening to 5-6 Beaufort in the eastern part of the prefecture. In Thessaloniki, partly cloudy skies are expected with temperatures between 25 and 35 degrees. The Meltemi wind in the Aegean Sea is expected to strengthen, reaching up to 6 Beaufort locally.
