Heatwave Fuels Wildfires: Spain and France Battle Spreading Blazes

Wildfires are intensifying and expanding across France and Spain, forcing thousands of tourists to evacuate popular coastal areas and prompting authorities to issue emergency measures.

In southwestern France, near Bordeaux, a fire that erupted Wednesday morning in Saumos has already consumed 800 hectares, an area roughly twice the size of Heligoland. The Gironde prefecture declared the highest level of forest fire alert, ordering evacuations for two neighborhoods in Le Porge. Approximately 3,500 vacationers from the La Grigne campsite were relocated to the nearby resort town of Lacanau. A beach in Le Porge, where around 600 vehicles were parked, was also cleared. A large contingent of 500 firefighters, supported by four water-bombing aircraft and 150 vehicles, is battling the flames under extremely unfavorable weather conditions. Tragically, two firefighters died the previous day after being trapped by flames in their vehicle during a separate wildfire near Bordeaux airport.

Spanish authorities are also grappling with multiple blazes. In the region of Castile and León, about 70 kilometers southwest of Madrid, villages near Almorox were evacuated or placed under curfew due to a fire. The Guardia Civil has closed several major roads, warning residents about severely reduced visibility due to smoke. Civil protection advised those with respiratory conditions to keep windows closed at night. Another significant wildfire continues to rage in the province of Guadalajara, north of Madrid, having devastated 32,000 hectares since last Thursday. Since the beginning of the year, Spain has experienced numerous fires.
