Heatwave Grips Southern US, Breaking Records and Threatening Millions

A relentless heatwave is scorching the southern United States, placing over 70 million people under various alerts as temperatures soar to dangerous levels. Florida and states bordering Mexico are particularly affected, with the National Weather Service (NWS) reporting highs of up to 46 degrees Celsius (115 Fahrenheit).

This mid-summer heatwave has shattered or tied temperature records for this time of year in numerous cities, including Miami and Fort Lauderdale in Florida, and Laredo and Austin in Texas. Forecasters predict continued days with highs near 38 degrees Celsius (100 Fahrenheit) and heat index values reaching 46 degrees Celsius (115 Fahrenheit). The phenomenon is also expanding westward, bringing intense heat to Nevada, Arizona, and California.

In response, the NWS is advising residents to limit outdoor activities, stay hydrated, and utilize air conditioning or public cooling centers. Vulnerable individuals, including friends, neighbors, and family members, require close monitoring. This heatwave follows a summer already characterized by above-average temperatures and significant wildfire risks, with nearly three million hectares burned so far this year, the highest in a decade. July was also recorded as the hottest month in U.S. history.
