Heatwave to Thunderstorms: Croatia Braces for Major Weather Shift

Croatia is bracing for a dramatic weather shift as a heatwave, with daytime temperatures soaring between 30 and 35 degrees Celsius, is set to be replaced by thunderstorms and cooler conditions. The Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service (DHMZ) has issued warnings for heatstroke, particularly for the elderly and young children, in the Rijeka, Split, and Dubrovnik regions.

As the heatwave continues into Sunday, with sunny skies and high temperatures expected, the DHMZ has also issued storm alerts for Sunday and Monday. These warnings cover several regions, including Kvarner, the Velebit Channel, and northern and central Dalmatia, due to strong winds. The alerts highlight the potential for severe thunderstorms, especially in exposed areas like mountains, forests, and open fields, advising caution and possible disruptions to outdoor activities.

The anticipated change is expected to bring rain, and possibly thunderstorms, to much of the country on Monday, particularly in Gorski Kotar, central Croatia, and the northern Adriatic. By Tuesday, the weather is forecast to gradually clear and stabilize, bringing fresher temperatures, especially inland. This transition marks a significant turn from the current hot spell, offering relief but also bringing the risk of severe weather events.
