Parliamentary Committee Session Postponed Due to Catastrophic Fire in Gospić

A parliamentary committee session focused on environmental protection and a hazardous waste landfill in Omiš, Croatia, has been postponed due to a significant fire affecting the Omiš region. The meeting, initially set for August 14, was rescheduled to August 17.

Dušica Radojčić, chairwoman of the committee and a member of the Možemo! party, announced the postponement. The session was intended to address information on activities undertaken regarding the landfill, environmental and health risks, proposed remediation plans, and the associated financial and timeframes. The chief state attorney, Ivan Turudić, had confirmed his attendance, as requested by eight committee members who believed the discussion could involve criminal liability.

Representatives from the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Green Transition and the Ministry of Health were also expected to attend. Several other officials, including the prefect of Lika-Senj County, the mayor of Gospić, the director of the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund, and the head of the Croatian Institute of Public Health, were invited. The committee also proposed a public hearing for August 18, which would require the support of committee members.

The situation surrounding the Gospić landfill has already sparked strong political reactions, with opposition representatives criticizing the government's handling of the matter.
