Heavy death toll in fire fronts: Three firefighters fall in the line of duty as battle with flames continues

Greece is grappling with a devastating wildfire season that has claimed the lives of three firefighters and injured three others, as blazes rage across the country.

The most tragic incidents occurred near Rethymno on Crete, where two firefighters perished after their vehicle became trapped in the intense flames of the Krya Vrysi fire. Another firefighter died in Gytheio, despite efforts by rescuers and medical staff at Sparta hospital. The fires have led to evacuations in several settlements, with authorities urging residents to leave affected areas.

High winds are significantly complicating firefighting efforts, forcing the withdrawal of aerial resources for safety reasons. This has allowed the fires, particularly the one in Krya Vrysi, to spread uncontrollably over an estimated 20 kilometers. The Hellenic Fire Service has been responding to numerous incidents, with 37 agricultural and forest fires reported between Tuesday and Wednesday.

Looking ahead, the risk of further fires remains extremely high. The Civil Protection agency has issued warnings for very high fire risk (level 4) in multiple regions, including Attica, Euboea, Crete, and parts of the Peloponnese, indicating that the battle against the flames is far from over.
