Heavy rain warning raises flood risk in low-lying areas

Authorities in Pakistan are on high alert as the country's Meteorological Department warns of heavy monsoon rains expected to cause urban flooding and inundation in low-lying areas. The Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) specifically cautioned about water accumulation in several cities, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Lahore. The warning comes as rising river flows have pushed Tarbela Dam close to its maximum capacity, heightening concerns about potential flooding.

The FFD also alerted to the risk of flash flooding in hill torrents and local streams across regions like Kashmir, Murree, Galiyat, northeastern Punjab, and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Medium to high water flows are anticipated in nullahs connected to major rivers such as the Jhelum, Chenab, and Ravi. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is reviewing flood preparedness measures in response to the escalating risk.
