Heavy Rains Cause Embankment Erosion Near Kaohsiung Building; No Immediate Danger Found

Heavy rains in Taiwan's southern Kaohsiung city have led to localized erosion along a drainage embankment near the Jingying Huiguan building in the Nanzi District. The scouring occurred due to continuous downpours, raising concerns about the safety of the building and its residents.

City officials, including Vice Mayor Lin Chin-jung, convened an inspection with representatives from four major engineering and architectural guilds. The initial assessment on August 25 confirmed that the main structure of the Jingying Huiguan building is not currently facing immediate danger. However, the erosion of the embankment and surrounding soil necessitates careful monitoring and preventative measures.

Vice Mayor Lin emphasized a "three-track" approach: reinforcing the embankment, continuous building monitoring, and ongoing observation of the site. The Water Resources Bureau is tasked with reinforcing the embankment's foundation and filling eroded areas to prevent further water infiltration and soil loss. Simultaneously, the Public Works Bureau will closely monitor the building for any signs of settlement, tilting, or structural anomalies.

Engineers have already begun initial reinforcement work, including grouting deeper eroded sections near the building and road, and implementing measures to redirect water flow. Protective sheeting has been placed over damaged road surfaces to mitigate further erosion from rainfall. The city plans a second phase of reinforcement and embankment stabilization, depending on site conditions and weather patterns, to ensure the safety of residents and public facilities.
