Heavy Rains Cause Nearly NT$30 Million in Agricultural Losses Across Taiwan

Taiwan is grappling with significant agricultural damage following continuous heavy rainfall in its southern regions. As of August 25, total agricultural losses have neared NT$30 million, with Yunlin County bearing the brunt of the impact, reporting losses of NT$15.5 million. Scallions have been identified as the most severely affected crop, with an estimated loss of NT$6.38 million.

The recent downpours, driven by a strong southwest monsoon and a low-pressure trough, have inundated areas including Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung. The Ministry of Agriculture has compiled data indicating agricultural product losses at NT$24.8 million and livestock losses at NT$1.72 million, primarily affecting chickens. Damage to private facilities, particularly poultry sheds in Chiayi County, amounts to approximately NT$2.8 million.

In response to the crisis, the Ministry of Agriculture has proactively announced disaster relief measures and low-interest loan options for farmers in Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung. This aims to support farmers in their recovery and replanting efforts as they face the aftermath of the severe weather.
