Heavy Rains Forecast for Northern Vietnam; Four Provinces Warned of Flash Flood Risk

Northern Vietnam is bracing for continued heavy rainfall today, with the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting issuing warnings for flash floods and landslides in mountainous regions. Four provinces, Lai Châu, Điện Biên, Sơn La, and Lào Cai, are at high risk.

Overnight and early this morning, the Northwest region saw moderate to heavy rainfall, with some areas like Ka Lăng in Lai Châu recording over 195.8 mm. The forecast indicates scattered showers and thunderstorms across the northern midlands and mountainous areas today, with potential for rainfall exceeding 50 mm. Heavier rain, ranging from 50-100 mm and possibly over 250 mm in some locations, is expected from tonight through tomorrow.

Concerns are particularly high for flash floods and landslides, as soil moisture levels in the affected provinces are already near saturation. The center noted that rainfall exceeding 100 mm within a three-hour period could trigger these events. Local authorities have been advised to proactively identify and address potential blockages in waterways and vulnerable areas.

In Lai Châu province, recent flash floods in Mường Than have resulted in one confirmed death and five individuals whose information is yet to be verified. Additionally, 49 houses were damaged or collapsed in affected areas. Emergency services have relocated 26 households and 103 people from dangerous zones to safety.
