Heavy rains trigger floods and landslides in three districts

Nepal is grappling with severe impacts from heavy monsoon rains, which have triggered widespread floods and landslides across Bajura, Kaski, and Jajarkot districts. The extreme weather has left one person missing, injured at least two, damaged homes and bridges, and cut off vital road networks.

In Bajura district, a landslide in Triveni Municipality-9 buried two houses on Thursday. One person remains missing, and two others sustained injuries. Police reported that rescue operations are challenging due to continuous rainfall and the persistent threat of further landslides. A dedicated rescue team, including police and armed forces personnel, has been deployed to the affected area.

With both bridges gone, residents travelling between Deupur in Parbat and Nayapul in Kaski now have to take a longer route.

The Modi River in Kaski swelled significantly, washing away two bridges that connected Haijung in Annapurna Rural Municipality-6 to Deupur Mohoriya in Modi Rural Municipality-1 of Parbat district. One of these bridges, crucial for access to the Mata Annapurna temple, had been previously damaged by flooding. The surge on Thursday night destroyed the second bridge, forcing residents to take a longer route for travel. The flood also damaged parts of the temple, leaving three individuals stranded, who were later rescued by a disaster management team.

Further devastation occurred in Jajarkot, where relentless rain caused flooding and erosion, sweeping away two houses in Roli, Nalgad Municipality-10, and putting two more at high risk. A suspension bridge's damage has disrupted local movement, and the Jajarkot-Dolpa section of the Bheri Corridor is blocked. The Tasughat river's sharp rise after continuous rain since Thursday night has stranded travelers and residents due to the lack of alternative routes. The destruction of a suspension bridge in Roli has halted pedestrian traffic.
