Heavy Rains Trigger Floods in Mazatlán, Forcing Road Closures

Mazatlán, Sinaloa, experienced severe flooding after heavy rains inundated the city, forcing the closure of seven key road crossings. The downpour caused eleven storm drains to overflow, inundating streets and prompting preventative measures by civil protection authorities.

Emergency crews responded to numerous calls, clearing fallen trees and assisting residents. In one instance, neighbors helped an elderly woman evacuate her home as water levels rose rapidly on her street in the El Zapote community. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported, according to municipal Civil Protection Coordinator Oscar Osuna Tirado.

Osuna Tirado noted that rainfall totaled 159.5 millimeters between Wednesday morning and early Wednesday, affecting 24 neighborhoods. He warned that more rain is expected and emphasized the ongoing efforts to clean storm drains and canals to mitigate future flooding. Interim Mayor Minerva Osuna Zavala surveyed the damage in the Urías area, one of the hardest-hit zones, to assess the impact on residents' homes.
