3 firefighters die in Greece battling wildfire; megafires in France and Spain stabilize

Three firefighters have died in Greece while combating a wildfire on the island of Crete, as Southern Europe grapples with a new heatwave and intense blazes. The tragic loss occurred in the Krya Vrysi area of Rethymno, where flames spread rapidly due to strong northern winds.

"They fell heroically in the line of duty to protect the lives and property of citizens, as well as the environment," the Fire Service stated in a release. The fire, which started near a waste disposal site, forced the evacuation of six villages with about a thousand permanent residents. This incident adds to the challenges faced by Greek authorities, with another fire affecting approximately 4,000 hectares on the tourist island of Paros.

Meanwhile, Spain announced its largest wildfire to date has been "technically stabilized" after scorching around 80,000 hectares in the Ávila, Madrid, and Toledo regions. France also reported stabilization of the massive fire near Bordeaux in the Gironda department after a calmer night. However, new fires prompted further evacuations in Spain, Portugal, and Greece.

The European Union's Civil Protection Mechanism warned that firefighting efforts alone are insufficient. It called for greater investment in prevention strategies to curb the recurring pattern of large-scale fires each summer. The mechanism continues to monitor the fires using satellite imagery from the Copernicus system.
