Heikki Papunen, Internationally Renowned Geologist, Dies at 89

Emeritus Professor of Geology and Mineralogy Heikki Papunen died in Turku on July 31, 2026, at the age of 89. Born in Ikaalinen on December 28, 1936, into a farming family, Papunen's early aptitude for academics led him to the Ikaalinen co-educational school, from which he graduated.

Papunen earned his Master of Science in 1960 and his Doctor of Philosophy in 1971 from the University of Turku. He began his career as an assistant at the university's newly established geology department. He was appointed associate professor in 1972 and full professor in 1981. Throughout his tenure, he served as head of the department multiple times, dedicating himself to its development and educational offerings.

His research focused on the geology and exploration of nickel ores, platinum group metals, and diamonds. He also studied copper ores, industrial minerals, meteorites, and impact craters. Papunen's international engagement included fellowships at Heidelberg University and research in Perth, Australia, complemented by numerous field excursions.

Papunen was an active participant in research projects and organized several scientific congresses. He held numerous positions of trust, including membership in the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters and honorary membership in the global Society of Economic Geologists. Among his scientific honors, the Eskola Medal from the Geological Society of Finland stands out as a rare distinction. Students and colleagues remember him as a demanding, diligent, and fair, yet also jovial and humorous individual. He embraced new knowledge readily and remained engaged in scientific discourse, adeptly using new technologies even in his later years. He was a beloved teacher, always available to assist and advise.

Heikki was a gentle father to his three daughters and a grandfather to nine grandchildren, with great-grandchildren as well. He shared a long life with his wife, Aila, from their high school years until her passing last autumn. In retirement, Heikki pursued genealogy and wrote books detailing the history of the Papunen family, tracing back to the 1540s. His daily routine included walks along the Aura River. His most cherished place was his cottage in Ikaalinen, which he built with his own hands on family land. Just weeks before his death this summer, he enjoyed sauna and mowed the lawn amidst the scenery of Lake Kyrösjärvi.
