Seppo Korhonen, Versatile Musician and Educator, Dies at 74

Musician Seppo Korhonen passed away in Luxembourg on June 4, 2026, at the age of 74. Born in Lahti on July 2, 1951, Korhonen's life's work was built around music, education, and collaboration. His musical foundation was laid at the Lahti Pentecostal Church, where his lifelong interest in arranging, versatile musicianship, and particularly brass and choral music began.

Seppo learned to play multiple instruments, which aided his arrangement work. He collaborated with orchestras across the country, the Lahti City Theatre, Lahti Big Band, and numerous other ensembles. His arrangements were performed at the Tangomarkkinat festival and by the Lappeenranta Dragoon Band. His performances were heard on recordings, at concerts, and on stage.

Korhonen was extensively involved in music education in Lahti. His efforts promoted the strong and uncompromising utilization of high-level sight-singing and choral pedagogy within music classes and music high schools. He was known as an excellent pianist and one of the most skilled teachers of free accompaniment of his time. He was a gifted and talented music arranger whose work inspired young singers and musicians. His broad musical expertise, combined with sensitive and perceptive teaching, merged artistic creativity and vision, elevating Lahti's music class and high school education to a national elite level in his era.

The Pro Canto choir was founded in 1996 by former members of Lahti's Tiirismaa representative choir who wished to continue their high-level work after graduation. Seppo arranged nearly all the pieces performed by Pro Canto, tailoring them specifically for the choir. For 29 years, Lahti residents repeatedly enjoyed expansive soundscapes during the annual Christmas Eve concerts.

Seppo's skill in building a distinctive sound for the choir and his precise yet inspiring working method left a lasting mark on the choir and its singers. Outside of his work, Seppo was remembered as a warm storyteller, a communal individual, and a friend who valued quality. In his final years, he spent part of the year in Luxembourg with his wife, Suvi-Kirsi. The artist couple performed together frequently, and their individual music projects enriched their home life and close collaboration. Seppo Korhonen's unforgettable and significant work in music and its education will continue through his students, colleagues, and the listeners of his music.
