Helsinki’s Kino Konepaja Cinema Closes Suddenly Amid Owner’s Financial Troubles

Kino Konepaja, a neighborhood cinema in Helsinki’s Vallila district, has closed suddenly after its parent company ran into financial difficulties.

Whitepoint Digital, a company focused on film post-production, filed for bankruptcy at the end of August. The tax authorities also filed for the company’s bankruptcy on the same day. The cinema closed at the same time, and previously agreed events were unexpectedly canceled.

Theater manager Jojo Uimonen remains hopeful. She said the closure was planned as temporary and that negotiations over the cinema’s future had already begun.

The cinema opened two years ago and became profitable after initial difficulties, as the Konepaja area was completed. A decision on whether it will continue is expected in the coming weeks.
