Herbalists back Nwifuru’s re-election bid in Ebonyi

The National Union of Medical Herbal Practitioners, Ebonyi State chapter, has strengthened its organizational structure by inaugurating the executive committee for its Abakaliki Local Government Area chapter. This move is part of an ongoing effort to establish strong leadership across all local government areas in the state, with Abakaliki being the third council area to inaugurate its executive, following Ezza North and Ezza South.

During the inauguration ceremony in Abakaliki on Sunday, the state chairman of the union, Chief Ndubuisi Nwogha, charged the newly elected officers to uphold professional and ethical standards among practitioners. He emphasized the union's commitment to saving lives and protecting the profession's image, warning against involvement in ritual practices or criminal activities. "Our responsibility is to ensure that herbal practitioners do the right thing. They must not be involved in ritual practices, criminal activities or anything capable of tarnishing the image of our profession. We are here to save lives and not to destroy them," Nwogha stated.

The union took the opportunity to appeal to the Ebonyi State Government to establish a dedicated Medical Herbal Board. Such a board, they believe, would be instrumental in regulating and promoting traditional medicine within the state. Dr. Victor Onuoha, the state Secretary of the union, echoed this sentiment, urging the government to enhance collaboration with the union. This partnership, he suggested, would be crucial in addressing the issue of fake practitioners and safeguarding the interests of genuine members. "We want the government to partner us in sanitising the profession," Onuoha added.

Furthermore, the National Union of Medical Herbal Practitioners reaffirmed its strong support for the re-election bid of Governor Francis Nwifuru in 2027. The group expressed a desire for the continuity of governance and existing policies, indicating their belief that Nwifuru's leadership is beneficial for the state.
