Heroism on Novalja beach: Doctors resuscitated a man for 40 minutes in 38-degree heat, saving his life

A dramatic rescue unfolded on Babe Beach in Novalja, Croatia, where a man's life hung in the balance after he began drowning on August 11. For nearly 40 minutes, a collective of bystanders and medical professionals fought to revive him under the harsh conditions of a rocky beach and scorching temperatures hovering around 38 degrees Celsius.

From the people who happened to be on the beach, to the doctors who were there privately, to the HMP Novalja team – we were all one team today.

As soon as the man was pulled from the water, those present initiated resuscitation efforts. Their actions were bolstered by the timely arrival of private citizens, including a cardiologist and an anesthesiologist, who were vacationing on the beach. They joined the resuscitation before the official Novalja Emergency Medical Service (HMP) team arrived.

Working together, the combined group continued the intensive resuscitation. Their persistent efforts paid off when, after approximately 40 minutes, the man's pulse was restored. One of the participating doctors also managed to establish an intravenous (IV) line, a crucial step in stabilizing a patient in critical condition.

One of the doctors involved expressed pride, noting, "I am proud that, although we were not on duty, we did not hesitate for a second but did what we know and what needed to be done."
