Heumen mayor closes another Overasselt home to safeguard public order

A second home in Overasselt has been closed after a night of armed violence that left a security guard dead and two police officers wounded. Heumen Mayor Joeri Minses said the two-week closure aims to restore calm in the area and safeguard public order.

More than 30 armed men opened fire on a farmhouse in Overasselt during the night from Monday to Tuesday. The property belongs to Jan G., whom local reporting describes as active in the drug milieu. On Thursday, Minses announced that G.'s home would be closed for one year.

The home closed Friday is reportedly occupied by members of G.'s family, according to neighborhood residents quoted by Omroep Gelderland. Around the same time as the attack on G.'s farmhouse, an explosive device was placed at the front door of the second property.

Police have arrested 34 people in connection with the deadly violence. The Public Prosecution Service said Friday that 32 suspects would remain in custody longer on suspicion of murder or manslaughter. The suspects include men from France, the Netherlands and Algeria, and two are minors.
